Oura Ring Alternatives Without a Subscription: Owners Say the Battery Is the Real Catch

Oura Ring alternatives without a subscription: McRoy ranking of RingConn, Ultrahuman and Samsung Galaxy Ring

In short: RingConn had the happiest owners of the no-subscription rings, but 42 owners said their ring's battery faded or died, usually 6 to 20 months in.

The McRoy Take

The no-subscription rings keep their promise: RingConn, Ultrahuman and Samsung all keep your data free. The catch owners keep hitting is the battery. 42 people in these comments said theirs faded or died, usually 6 to 20 months in, and every brand had cases, Oura included. RingConn had the happiest owners of the three, but read the warranty before you buy, because normal battery wear usually isn't covered.

How we rank

We only count people who say they actually used a product, one vote per person. "Keep using it" is the share of them who stuck with it rather than quitting. The McRoy Score combines how many people recommend a product (75%) with that keep-using rate (25%). Products need at least a few real users to be ranked; ones with fewer reviews are left out rather than guessed. Full method

The battery problem, in numbers

42 different owners in these comments said their own ring's battery faded badly, died or stopped charging: 18 Ultrahuman Ring Air owners, 13 RingConn owners, 9 Samsung Galaxy Ring owners and 2 Oura owners. Most said it happened between 6 and 20 months in. The usual story is battery life dropping from about a week to one or two days, or a ring that won't charge at all.

Warranty replacements often failed the same way. Several Ultrahuman owners were on their third, fourth or fifth ring, and one RingConn owner said the first ring lasted about 9 months and the replacement about 6.

This is not a failure rate. Many of these comments sit under videos about battery failures, which attract people with the same problem, and owners whose rings work fine rarely comment. Some long-term owners were happy: one RingConn owner still gets 8 days a charge after a year, and an Ultrahuman owner gets 6 to 7 days after 11 months. But it came up for every brand, Oura included, so plan for it whichever ring you buy.

The widely shared story of a Galaxy Ring swelling on a YouTuber's finger in 2025 was traced by Samsung and an outside lab to a crack in the ring's internal moulding, not the battery.

Subscription check (October 2026)

RingConn Gen 2 and Gen 2 Air: no subscription. The app's standard features are free. List prices start at $199 for the Gen 2 Air and $299 for the Gen 2.

Ultrahuman Ring Air: no subscription for your data and core features ($349 list). A few partner add-ons in the app cost extra, and UltrahumanX is an optional paid plan that extends the warranty.

Samsung Galaxy Ring: no subscription. Everything shows up in the free Samsung Health app, though Samsung has said some future features could be paid.

For comparison, Oura Membership costs $5.99 a month or $69.99 a year after the first free month.

Before you buy

Normal battery wear usually isn't covered. RingConn and Ultrahuman both say gradual battery decline is excluded from the standard warranty, and Ultrahuman says to expect a slow drop after 1 to 2 years (about 500 charge cycles). Check the warranty length where you live; RingConn and Samsung give 1 year in the US.

Where you buy can matter. One RingConn owner who bought from Amazon said support refused to set up their replacement ring because it wasn't bought directly from RingConn. If brand support matters most to you, the brand's own store may be the safer choice, and either way keep your receipt.
