How McRoy Ranks

McRoy ranks hair products by what real people say about them on Reddit. We don't use brand claims, influencer posts or press releases. We read what people actually use, rebuy and defend after months of real use, and turn it into a simple score.

1. We collect the conversations

For each product type (for example, shampoos for thinning hair) we gather Reddit threads from the past 12 months in hair communities such as r/tressless, r/HairLoss, r/curlyhair, r/malehairadvice and r/Hair. We keep threads that are actually about choosing or using that kind of product.

2. We keep real reviews only

A comment counts only when the person has used the product. Passing mentions ("I've heard X is good") are left out. Each review is tagged positive, negative or neutral, and we save a short quote so you can read it in the person's own words.

3. We match the exact product

People rarely type full product names. We match nicknames like "Nizoral" or "the Revita one" to the exact product, and group variants together when people talk about them as one product.

4. We score it

Every product gets a McRoy Score from 0 to 100:

  • 75% comes from how many people recommend it, compared with the most-recommended product in the list.
  • 25% comes from its positive-to-negative ratio, so a product that people love but that also gets many complaints is held back.
  • Each person counts once per product, however many times they comment.

Next to each score you'll see the total number of reviews, how many were positive and negative, and the top comments, so you can judge for yourself.

5. We check it by hand

Every list is reviewed by a person before it goes live. We update lists when new discussions change the picture, and every page shows when it was last updated.

What we don't do

  • Brands can't pay to be included or to rank higher.
  • We don't give medical advice. For hair loss or scalp problems that worry you, talk to a dermatologist.
