Expensive vs Budget Electric Toothbrushes: What 42 Owners Actually Said

Expensive vs budget electric toothbrushes: McRoy ranking of budget Oral-B, Philips Sonicare, Laifen Wave Pro and Oral-B iO

In short: All 5 budget Oral-B owners with a verdict were happy, Sonicare owners were split, and the premium Oral-B iO drew the most complaints.

The McRoy Take

If you just want clean teeth, start with a budget Oral-B like the Pro 1000 or Vitality: every owner who gave a verdict was happy with theirs. Sonicare owners were split, and the premium Oral-B iO drew the most complaints, mostly about chargers, batteries and brush heads. These are small numbers, so treat this as a sanity check rather than proof, but owners found the expensive extras easy to live without.

Kept using it · YouTube“I got both the Series 9 IO and the pro 1000, but I ended up liking the Pro one better all because of the physical back & forth scrubbing sensation which felt much more effective & satisfying than the iO's vibrating motor.”

How we rank

We only count people who say they actually used a product, one vote per person. "Keep using it" is the share of them who stuck with it rather than quitting. The McRoy Score combines how many people recommend a product (75%) with that keep-using rate (25%). Products need at least a few real users to be ranked; ones with fewer reviews are left out rather than guessed. Full method

What the numbers say (and don't)

42 owners gave a verdict we could count. The 6 budget Oral-B owners (Pro 1000, Pro 3, Vitality and a "$20 Oral-B") were the happiest: 5 liked theirs and none complained. Sonicare owners were split, 5 happy and 4 not. The premium Oral-B iO had 2 happy owners and 9 unhappy ones.

The iO complaints were mostly hardware: 3 brushes that died early or wouldn't charge, 2 batteries that faded within months, 1 handle growing mould inside, 2 people who rated the brush heads poorly and 1 support dispute. 3 of those 9 complaints came from comments under a single Brazilian video, so don't read too much into the exact count.

These are small numbers, so treat them as a sanity check rather than proof. They fit what several owners said after upgrading: one longtime Sonicare user who tried a much more expensive model noticed no real difference in cleaning, only extra modes and an app they didn't use.

What owners said to look for

A pressure sensor and a 2-minute timer. Owners called the pressure sensor a must-have, and both budget picks here have one.

The cost of brush heads. One Oral-B owner said they'd spent about 1.5 times the handle's price on replacement heads over four years, and iO heads cost roughly twice as much as Pro heads.

The feel. Some owners found the Sonicare too intense at higher settings, and others felt the same about the iO. Starting on the lowest setting helps.

Prices (October 2026)

Oral-B Vitality: about $25. Oral-B Pro 1000: about $50. Philips Sonicare 4100: about $40 to $50. Oral-B iO: from about $60 for the iO2 to over $300 for the iO9 and iO10.

Prices change often and there are frequent sales, so check the current price before you buy.
